Apple Valley Fire Protection District firefighters participate in child literacy throughout the year by reading in elementary school classrooms as a part of the On Fire for Literacy program.
November 1st was National Literacy Day. The Read, Write, Think website which is managed by the International Reading Association explains that Family Literacy Day events are held across the U.S throughout the month of November. Schools, libraries, and other literacy organizations participate through read-a-thons, celebrity appearances, book drives, and more.
According to the National Children’s Literacy Website, “More than any other single skill, the ability to read – and read well – allows a child to succeed in school, learn about the world, function in society, and someday have decent job options.”
